Law Student

Registering for classes was really easy. I went into the Undergraduate Student Office in the Law School and picked my classes and that was it. I think you have until the first or second week of school to change courses. There are some other administrative things to be done, but it doesn't really take too long. I did this during the Melbourne Welcome week and then went away for orientation. Queen's students were required to take four classes, but other Canadian exchange students only had to take three. The University of Melbourne won't know how many courses you need to take, so just double check!! The courses I took were: Advocacy, Migration, Media and European Civil Law and the EU. The professors were very good. There is less reading and work during the semester, but there are more reflective assignments. Also, the marking system in Australia is quite different. In Canadian law schools I think it would be fairly difficult to actually fail a class. In Australia it would be possible to fail a course even if you did a substantial amount of work. Exchanges students tend to not be the most dedicated students, so that might be something to watch out for.

I can't think of anything that really caught me off-guard about Australia. People have said that Australia is a lot like Canada, but I don't think that is true at all. There is a definite attitude difference, which can be both positive and negative. Melbourne is a lot colder and wetter than I thought it would be during the winter. The weather is very unpredictable and varies widely even during the day. Cosmetics, make-up, shampoo moisturizer etc. are probably more than double the price they are in Canada. Melbourne is a fabulous city and it would take much longer than four months to see visit all the neighbourhoods, shopping areas, and museums. I travelled through New Zealand for a couple of weeks, and then up the East Coast of Australia before school in January and February. I went on a trip during Easter and another trip at the end of exams.
