There is an orientation during the first week of classes, but like most orientations they are meant for first year students. I didn't go to the orientation. The university also offers a program called the Melbourne Welcome for exchange students. This program places students in the university residences for a few days and offers lots of field trips and pub nights. I went to the Melbourne Welcome and have mixed feelings about it. It was great that I had a place to stay the first few days in Melbourne. I used the time to look for an apartment and register for classes. There a few hundred people participating in the program and 95% of them were American students in their third year of undergrad. So I guess it depends on how comfortable you feel away from home. It was not really what I expected. Most of the people hadn't been away from home before and were really homesick. The Melbourne Welcome did plan good activities, such as surfing and wildlife trips, a tour of Melbourne, and pub nights. And it was nice to recognize some people around campus, however, the law school is not exactly on the main campus.

The University College Apartments are usually where the Melbourne Welcome exchange students stay. There isn't really anything like Harkness or Grad Residence. There is a Graduate House, it includes all room and board, but there are only a few rooms and you should apply before you leave Canada. This is really close to the law school. When I arrived in Melbourne I checked the paper and the notice boards for shared accommodation. I did end up finding a good place to stay with a no lease, but it was more money that I wanted to spend. Most people on law exchanges looked for accommodation when they arrived. It is a little stressful, but everyone ended up with something. You'll probably have to either spend more money, or deal with problematic landlords, but I still think it was much better than residence. Residence is also quite expensive. Even though I spent much more in rent than I wanted it was still cheaper than residence. There is an official notice board in the housing office and another, less official one in the Union House, near the stairs. I think that is where most people found the places they were going to stay.
